Traffic accidents resulting in injuries or fatalities are common across the nation and the state of Connecticut is no exception. As severe weather including snow, ice, and deep-freeze temperatures have taken hold of much of the northeast part of the U.S. this winter, treacherous driving conditions result. These conditions add to the risks drivers, their passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists face when taking to the roads and highways.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a federal agency operating under the Department of Transportation, Connecticut's overall traffic accident statistics have been decreasing in the past five years. The NHTSA has reported that the total number of traffic fatalities in 2008 stood at 302. In 2012, this number had declined to 236. The majority of these fatalities occur in urban areas. Passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in 2008 totaled 183 which decreased to 153 in 2012. Alcohol-related traffic fatalities numbered 95 in 2008, reducing to 85 in 2012. Speeding-related fatalities stood at 99 in 2008 and fell to only 39 in 2012.
Motorcycle fatalities have also decreased in the state. In 2008, 63 people died in motorcycle crashes. That number decreased to 40 in 2012. 26 of those who died in motorcycle accidents in 2012 were not wearing helmets. Pedestrian fatalities have also declined in the state from 47 in 2008 to 36 in 2012.
Personal Injury Attorney in Hartford, Connecticut
While the decrease in traffic fatalities across the boards is a positive trend in Connecticut, any deaths or injuries on the roads and highways are unacceptable. Anyone involved in a traffic accident stands to end up seriously injured and facing days, weeks, or months of medical treatment, lost wages, pain, suffering, and more. When these individuals are forced to endure such adverse consequences due to the negligence or wrongdoing of others, they deserve monetary compensation for their injuries and losses. Getting trusted and knowledgeable legal help is essential to ensure that a fair and just settlement or verdict is obtained from an insurance carrier that usually is not interested in the best interests of accident victims.
