14,220 child safety seats were subject to a recall by the manufacturer in January 2012 due to a defect. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), consumers were alerted to the recall of Chaperone Infant Car Seats, sold by Britax Child Safety, Inc. The child safety seats were recalled because of a defect in the harness adjuster which results in harness straps that may not be effective in restraining a child.
The safety seats subject to the recall include those manufactured from September 1, 2010 until April 30, 2011. In these seats, a rivet attaching the harness adjuster to the seat may be defective, allowing the harness adjuster to detach from the seat. When this detachment occurs, the safety seat can prove to be faulty in protecting the child. Detailed information concerning the issue involved and the recall is available at NHTSA’s safety website, SaferCar.gov.
