Have you ever felt nervous in certain "racy" cities while driving? You might be wishing you were driving in a safer city at this time, but how would you know what cities were safer than any others? The statistics are in; Allstate's seventh year annual report lists the top ten safest cities to travel in.
For the second time in a row, Fort Collins, Colorado has come in first as the safest city to drive in nationwide. Approximately, most people get into an accident every 10 years, but in Fort Collins, Colorado the average person gets in a car accident every 14 years. Also, out of the 200 cities polled, drivers in Fort Collins, Colorado are 28.6 percent less likely to get into an accident compared to the rest of the nation.
Allstate compiles the list based on the number of claims reported in each city and post the results as an incentive to other cities while giving recognition to the other top cities. They hope to keep America aware of driving topics in order to inform them of the validity of safe driving. Along with Fort Collins Colorado are the other nine states given in order:
- Boise, Idaho;
- Lincoln, Nevada;
- Chandler, Arizona;
- Huntsville, Alaska;
- Knoxville, Tennessee;
- Springfield, Montana;
- Reno, Nevada;
- Eugene, Oregon; and
- Chattanooga, Tennessee
All these cities are at least 16.3 percent less likely to get into an automobile accident than the average American driver in the nation; people in Chattanooga, Tennessee are involved in a car crash every 11.9 years which is 1.9 percent above average. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that even though crashes have decreased in the last couple of years, crash fatalities still add out to about 32,000 deaths a year; they allege that this might have to do with the recent advances in technology. One source reported that the most dangerous accidents are usually caused by human behavior and that this annual report by Allstate is a beneficial endeavor; the report is both informative while using positive statistics to engage people. Allstate also gives the following tips to help drivers maintain safe vehicle conditions:
- Be cautious on different road environments;
- Do not tailgate;
- Recognize potentially dangerous drivers; and
- Keep your car in mint condition
Recently, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) suggested that each state ban any technological device while driving on the road. The newest research has caused sources to believe that many Americans use a less proficient brain level function while driving and using technological devices simultaneously. Therefore, Allstate advises to stay focused on the road; driving distractions such as talking or texting on your cell phone, changing the radio, or putting on makeup can cause serious distractions.
Also, snow, rain, fog, or hail is each environmental condition which requires more caution when driving; each condition might require different driving tactics to keep you safe. Also, a universal rule that is always beneficial to use on the road is not to tailgate. Tailgating is often not appreciated by other drivers and can more likely lead to an accident. If tailgating, another driver could start displaying signs of aggressive behavior. It is always important to disregard a challenge on the road from other upset drivers; especially if they are displaying classic signs of road rage. If you are prone to aggressive behavior on the road, try to give yourself enough driving time, as well as planning directions that will steer you clear of high stress traffic situations. Lastly, a car is only as good as the parts put into it, so making sure that your car has quality parts is essential to car maintenance.
