Driver Errors that Lead to Car Accidents

With the number of distractions that exist in our society, it is not uncommon for an individual to get in a car accident due to the failure to fully pay attention to the road.

Common Types of Driver Error:

  • Cell phone use: Cell phones are the number one cause of distracted driving. In addition to phone calls and texting, there are a number of apps and social media sites that can cause a driver to pay more attention to their phone than the road.
  • Multi-Tasking: People often think they are capable of managing more tasks at once than they actually are, thus leading to the attempt to multi-task. Whether they are eating while driving, texting while driving, or trying to find a radio station while driving, the driver is still attempting to engage in more tasks than they may be able to handle.
  • Speeding: Driving over the speed limit can cause car accidents—especially when the weather conditions have led to wet, slippery roads and poor visibility. Drivers that speed or weave in and out of traffic are increasing their chances of getting into an auto accident.
  • Driving while fatigued: Operating a vehicle while tired can also be a contributor of car accidents. Not only is a fatigued driver more likely to fall asleep, but their reaction times will be delayed when it comes to avoiding a potential hazard on the road. They are also more likely to commit driver error, such as going through a stop sign or a red light.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and/ or drugs: Individuals that choose to drive under the influence are much more likely to get into car accidents. This is because their motor skills are not fully functioning, their reaction time is increased, and their overall ability to properly operate a vehicle has been compromised. Thus, driving under the influence puts their own life and the lives of others in harm's way.
