Marijuana Users Play a Large Part in Fatal Car Accidents in Colorado

In Colorado, individuals are legally allowed to smoke marijuana recreationally without fear of penalty. Unfortunately, this decision has resulted in an extensive number of facts. The University of Colorado School of Medicine shows that the proportion of marijuana-positive drivers involved in fatal accidents in Colorado has increased dramatically since 2009. That is the year that medical marijuana was commercialized in the state of Colorado.
The researchers used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System to discover the connection between fatal car accidents in Colorado and marijuana. They also inspected several different states that didn't have medical marijuana laws to see if the number of vehicle fatalities in these locations was smaller.
What researchers discovered was that in Colorado, the number of marijuana users involved in fatal crashes has skyrocketed. Back in 1994, only about 4.5 percent of all drivers in fatal crashes tested positive for marijuana. Recent data from 2011 shows that now 10 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes are on marijuana.
This study serves as a precaution to inform individuals of the future of highways in states where recreational marijuana is legal. Like alcohol, marijuana can inhibit the senses, slowing reaction times and causing drivers to fail to observe danger. If you want more information about marijuana driving, or if you were injured in a car accident with a driver under the influence of marijuana, don't hesitate to contact a local car accident firm today.
Generally, if the individual who caused an accident was drunk or under the influence of drugs, it is easier for you prove that he or she is liable for the accident. Don't hesitate to talk with an attorney today if you want more information.
