According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2014, 2,338,000 people were injured in traffic crashes, a 1.1% increase over 2013. If you haven't already, the chances of being in at least one car accident in your lifetime are high, and many people are in multiple accidents over the course of their lifetimes.
Considering that it's highly possible that you will be involved in a collision in the future, it's important that you understand how to conduct yourself at the accident scene. If you mistakenly say or do the wrong thing, your actions or words can harm your car accident claim.
Car Accident Tips and Advice
If you ever find yourself in the situation where you're involved in a car accident, here is what NOT to do at the accident scene:
- Do not flee the scene of the accident, even if it wasn't your fault. Each state has laws requiring drivers to stop after an accident, check that everyone is okay, and call an ambulance for the injured. If you flee the scene, you can face criminal charges for hit and run.
- Do not admit fault. Don't say, "I'm sorry" or "It's all my fault." It may not be your fault at all, or the other driver may be partially at fault. If you admit fault, it can make the claims process much more difficult. Instead, let the insurance companies determine fault.
- Don't forget to get the other driver's information. Be sure to get the other driver's license number, license plate number, insurance information, phone number and address. If you do not get this information, you may never be able to find them again.
- Don't agree not to call the police. After an accident, you want to call the police and have them file a police report. It makes the claims process easier, especially if the other driver is dishonest and tries to avoid responsibility.
