The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) reports that traffic accident, injury, and fatality rates in the state have been on an overall steady decline since 1999. Injury rates from traffic accidents in 1999 were 165.20 per 100 million miles traveled (MMT). In 2008, the most recent year in which the DOT has published statistics, the injury rate had decreased to 114.86 MMT. Fatal accident rates in the state in 1999 stood at 0.91 MMT; this declined to 0.88 MMT in 2008. Fatality rates from traffic accidents in 1999 were 1.01 per MMT which decreased to 0.96 per MMT in 2008. The highest percentage of Connecticut traffic accidents occur during rush hours, from 3 to 6 p.m. More than 75 percent of all traffic accidents in Connecticut occur in the counties of Fairfield, Hartford, and New Haven.
The most frequent contributing factors to Connecticut injury accidents were the driver was following too close, the driver failed to grant the right of way, lost control, or was speeding too fast for the current conditions. The most frequent contributing factors involved in traffic accident fatalities were the driver losing control or the driver was influenced by alcohol and / or drugs. 40 percent of all traffic fatalities involved hitting a fixed object while more than 30 percent of all traffic accident injuries involved rear-end collisions. Those most likely to be involved in an accident were drivers aged 20 to 24. In 2008, the state experienced a total of 104,187 traffic accidents in which 303 people died.
