According to Illinois department of transportation, a total of 274,111 crashes occurred on Illinois's roads in 2012. This makes it 751 accidents every single day, which also means, that in the state of Illinois currently, about nine people get injured in crashes every hour, and two people die in auto wrecks every day.
The data collected by the IDOT yields surprising results amidst the obviously anticipated readings. The accidents, their frequency, and the severity of their outcome, differed on the basis of the time they occurred. For example, while you could be at the highest risk of being involved in an accident at a particular time, you could face the risk of severe personal injury at another.
Some of the findings are as mentioned below –
- 86.2% of the accidents in the state have occurred within the limits of the urban boundaries, making urban roadways the most dangerous.
- Surprisingly, almost 70% accidents take place during the day-time, increasing the probability of involvement in a daytime accident, between 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
- As expected, Friday is the most dangerous day of the week, as accident probability increases with drivers rushing home for the weekend, and by the rush of traffic headed towards a recreational getaway for the weekend.
- 40,229 accidents were reported between 8:00 AM and noon time, whereas, 120,000 were reported between afternoon to early evening, indicating that the morning rush may be safer than the commute home.
The data reveals that while the number of accidents reported in the daytime is higher, the severity of injuries and fatalities are more prominent in the night time.
The Data below indicates that the serious accidents usually occur at night, whereas a considerable number of accidents taking place in the daytime occur at low speeds.
- The data discloses that 93 urban road fatalities and about 82 rural road fatalities occur on Sundays.
- Second in line comes Saturday with 99 urban fatalities and 73 rural fatalities.
- In terms of fatalities, there was a considerable rise in occurrence between midnight and 4:00 AM. The evening rush hour of 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM came a close second
- Increased traffic volume caused by homeward bound traffic, and weekend holiday rush on Fridays and Saturdays resulted in an increase of accidents causing permanent physical damage.
- The data shows that severely life changing accidents take place between 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
