Chicago Car Accident Injury - Leading Cause of Death for Child Passengers

By Matthew Willens  Nov. 12, 2015 10:22a

Babies and young children are especially vulnerable in a car accident.

In the moments following a car crash, your first thought will be to check on your child. Here are some simple tips that will help you protect your baby or young child after a car accident. (Read here for additional child passenger safety tips).

Protecting a Young Child After a Car Crash

  • Even if you do not suspect serious injuries or damage, call 911.
  • Alert other drivers by switching on the emergency flashers.
  • If your child has been injured, do not move him or her. If your child has suffered a traumatic brain injury or spinal injury, moving him or her can worsen the condition and cause complications.
  • Even if there are no apparent injuries, have your child examined by a doctor so that any hidden injuries can be diagnosed and appropriate treatment given.
  • Call the child’s pediatrician for a follow-up visit.
  • If your child is crying excessively and is not consolable, he or she may be injured. Other symptoms may include sleepiness, lack of interest in eating or toys, or any other behavioral changes.
  • After the car accident, replace your child’s car seat.
  • Inform your child's caretaker of the accident. They will watch the child carefully for any symptoms of late appearing injuries.

If your child has been injured in a car crash, then he or she may require ongoing medical treatment. Recover compensation for your child from the person who is responsible. Compensation includes present and future medical expenses and pain and suffering. Contact a Willens personal injury lawyer chicago from Willens Law Offices. Call us today at (312) 957-4166.
