One man was seriously injured and his elderly passenger killed when the sedan they were in crashed. 57-year-old R.O. was heading westbound on the Long Island Expressway at around 7:30 on a recent weekday evening when something happened to cause the car to go off the roadway. The vehicle crashed into a pole near Exit 50 and both R.O. and D.B., 83 years old, were ejected from the car. Paramedics and other emergency authorities arrived promptly at the scene but were unable to help the elderly man who had died of his injuries. R.O. was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. Authorities are continuing to investigate the tragic accident and no preliminary findings have been released as yet in regard to why the car went off the road or if the driver is suspected of any negligence. Police, however, have stated that no criminality is suspected at this point in the ongoing accident investigation. The 2001 sedan that R.O. was driving was taken to an inspection facility as part of the fatal accident investigation. Car accidents involving serious injury or death are often caused by some form of negligence so make sure you have a knowledgeable personal injury attorney on your side who will make sure your case is thoroughly investigated and your rights are protected.
There are a variety of factors that should be looked into when there is a car accident. Sometimes there are multiple sources of negligence, carelessness or recklessness which contributed to the crash and share liability for any injuries or loss of life. Examples include driver fault such as texting while driving, driving while intoxicated, excessive speed or other reckless driving or things such as vehicle defects, poorly planned or maintained roadways, etc. It may be possible to recover compensation for medical expenses, pain, lost wages and other damages from the party or parties liable in a car accident.
