Recently, a 76-year old woman driving a Toyota Camry apparently accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes when approaching a stop sign outside a Palm Coast grocery store. Her car then sped forward at an estimated speed of 50 mph and crashed into the store for approximately 40 feet before it stopped. In its wake, ten people were injured, including an elderly couple in their 80's, a 15-year old girl, and a baby. The elderly man was sitting outside the entrance of the store when the accident occurred; he became pinned under the car. Both he and his wife were hospitalized. The driver was unhurt. Police conducting an investigation could find nothing mechanically wrong with the vehicle to explain why it happened. The driver was charged with careless driving.
According to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the state is home to more than 16 million drivers who could potentially cause a car accident every time they take the wheel. As of 2009 data collected by the DMV, Florida averaged 646 car accidents per day. In most studies examining the causes of auto accidents, driver inattention and driver error lead the list of why such accidents occur. While the number of traffic accidents has been decreasing over the last decade, these same accidents can cause horrendous damage to those unfortunate enough to be involved, as in the story above.
