A man, J.L., is currently being held in the Palm Beach County Jail for charges in connection to a hit and run and a second accident which resulted in the death of one of his passengers. The series of events that led to the fatal accident occurred around 12:30 in the morning on March 13. J.L. was driving a late model convertible in a suburban area. He side-swiped a compact car as he attempted to pass the vehicle and apparently beat a red light. Reports say he sped by at an approximate 80mph. Shortly after that hit and run, he lost control of his vehicle which began to spin off the roadway and then overturn after hitting a wall and a utility pole. J.L. and his two passengers were ejected from the vehicle—none were wearing seat belts. A 21-year-old woman that was sitting in the back seat was flown to a hospital where she later died of her injuries. J.L. and the front seat passenger were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. Detectives reported that cell phone records indicate that J.L. may have been texting or otherwise using his phone just before losing control of his car. J.L. and one of his passengers had already been on the radar of the sheriff's office in connection to illegal sales of prescription drugs a month before the accident. At the time of the crash, the man was discovered to have three drugs including oxycodone in his system according to a blood test. He has a prescription for oxycodone which makes it difficult for impairment to be established. He was taken into custody just recently on charges of drug selling, leaving the scene of a crash, driving with a suspended license and vehicular manslaughter.
